Independence Day on Burrard Bridge 2024
Performance. Ukrainian Independence Day on Burrard Bridge 2024
To mark Ukrainian Independence Day 2024, the Burrard Bridge in Vancouver became the site of a powerful, community-driven performance. Together with volunteers, we created a 550-meter-long Ukrainian flag by sewing blue and yellow sateen ribbons into a single continuous banner.
On the day of the celebration, the flag—wound on a large bobbin—was unwrapped along the entire span of the bridge, creating a bold, unbroken line of national colors above the water. Volunteers held the fabric together, forming a living chain that transformed the public space into a moving expression of solidarity.
The act of unrolling the flag symbolized continuity, resilience, and collective strength. Each person holding the fabric became part of something larger—a visible thread in the fabric of a shared identity. In a time of war and displacement, the performance offered a moment of unity, pride, and belonging for the Ukrainian community in Vancouver.
The concept and visual direction of the project were developed and led by Olena Krevenets, Creative Director.
